Episode 62 - Mind ZoningĀ® Taking a Break from Alcohol

As the holidays roll in we’re granted with an abundance of joys, more time off work, a shift in the seasons and time with family and friends. This for many of us, also includes an overload of comfort foods, sweet treats we’ve adored since childhood and social events surrounded by alcohol. Christa shares she’s been indulging in more alcohol than she’d like to with the stresses and celebrations surrounding the launch of her new book, Strategic Vitality: 11 Small Steps to a Big Transformation.

She explains coming off an amazing high after her book launch party which occurred last Saturday, excited that she could continue to share her story, her struggles and how she works on overcoming them. Christa has always been very open with her listeners about her love for wine and donuts, and is proud to bring more awareness about how common our reliance on sugar, refined carbs and alcohol truly is.

If you have a tendency to relay on booze, Christa challenges you this...

Episode 60 - Get Over the Fear of Jumping Into Keto with Leanne Vogel

We have an exciting show for you today as we help you get over the fear of jumping into the ketogenic diet with the Queen of Keto herself, Leanne Vogel!

Leanne started studying nutrition in 2007 to help her better understand her body and how it worked with the foods she was putting into it. Originally going to school to help herself, she discovered after graduation that she had learned too much not to help other people and that’s when her blog, “Healthful Pursuit” was born.

Being a super athlete, Leanne noticed after years of not having her menstrual cycle that she wasn’t performing at her best and was continually struggling to put on muscle. This sparked her interest in regulating her cycle, but after starting hormone replacement therapy she discovered it was stunting her training even more. She went to a naturopath begging for help and that’s where she was introduced to a ketogenic diet.

Desperate for a change, Leanne who was a vegan and whole-foods...

Episode 59 - I'm Not Perfect. I'm Not Your Guru

Warning, I curse in this one.

I’m so proud of this episode where I am 100% open and vulnerable about my personal fitness journey. I’m not perfect. I’m not your guru, but gosh darn it if I don’t work my a** off to keep myself and YOU moving forward.

Welcome back to the Fitlandia Podcast! We are excited to share more of Christa’s fitness journey to motivate and inspire our wonderful listeners! As Christa shares with us about her vulnerability and everyday struggles, she demonstrates how she keeps moving forward towards her own goals despite criticism from friends and family, as well as the temptations of the upcoming holiday season.

Episode 47 - My First Fast

Have you heard about the numerous health benefits of fasting and might be considering giving it a try? Well then, you’re in for a treat today as Christa shares with us her very own reasoning and experiences during her first extended fast!

Disclaimer: DO NOT ATTEMPT A FAST WITHOUT THE SUPERVISION OF YOUR HEALTHCARE PROVIDER. Important: this should not be used as a tool for quick weight loss but instead to become quickly keto-adapted or for ultimate vitality.

While already practicing intermittent fasting, a daily eating pattern that cycles between a fasting and eating window, Christa typically eats her last meal around 6 or 7pm and fasts until the following day between 11AM - 12PM. After reaping the benefits from this, she decided to try an extended fast of 72 hours.

What are the Benefits of Intermittent Fasting?

  • Increased energy and fat burning ability – this is especially true while practicing a ketogenic diet, allowing you to get you into ketosis quicker and convert...

Episode 38 - The Falsehood of Everything in Moderation

Dr. Jerome Craig is back to talk about the falsehood of “everything in moderation.” This idea of moderation is tossed around so much in the diet industry and they both agree that it’s setting us up for failure.

The Truth About Moderation

  • If you don’t want to change, then everything in moderation works great! It maintains the status quo.
  • If you want to make health and wellness changes in your life, then moderation is not going to work.
  • If you’re using moderation as an excuse for not changing, it’s working - there will be no change.

Dr. Craig provides an example of a patient who is a type 2 diabetic, on multiple medications, life not going well and who wants to change but cannot give up his daily chocolate-coated almonds. Dr. Craig appealed to the patient that he needed to get away from the almonds, that they were a sugar addiction and he needed to give them up.

“The only way to break an addiction to something is to give it up” Dr....

Episode 30 - Benefits of an Anti-Inflammatory Diet

We’re pleased to welcome Functional Medicine Practitioners, Doctors Mark and Michele Sherwood, to talk with us about how to live and benefit from an anti-inflammatory diet.

Background

Dr. Michele Sherwood began working in functional medicine after she began noticing that she addressed her patients more by their specific medications or diseases, instead of by their names. She had earned a naturopath degree before medical school and was now realizing she was simply prescribing maintenance medicines to her patients; a type of “band aid”. She discovered a dramatic improvement in her patients and in her practice when she began to look at the root cause and their life as a whole; including nutrition, activity level, hormonal balances, stress, and sleep patterns which can feed into sickness and disease.

Mark and Michele, besides being married, also have a wellness-based medical practice. They work with genetics, excessive fat reduction, medication reduction and...

Episode 7 - Stories of Transformation 3: Abi Barnett

On this episode, Christa talks to her friend Abi Barnett about her personal fitness journey. When Abi set out on her journey she discovered she was very set in her ways. She’d had “fit” friends, but always thought it was hard work. She’d try to eat healthy, but would only last a few days before saying ‘forget it’ and going back to McDonald’s. Sound familiar?

After “eating her way through Europe” with two weeks of champagne, pastries, and beautiful food Abi decided to join in on one of Fitlandia’s Month-long detoxes. Food is a beautiful way to celebrate, but the detoxes are about balance and stepping back from the patterns that we dig ourselves into. Because she’s a clarinetist Abi is incredibly disciplined, and once the switch is flipped she’s fully into it. She approached the detox wanting to achieve 100% perfection and not mess a single thing up.

The Detox That Stuck

Abi recounts a few anecdotes about the...

Episode 1 - Intro to the Fitlandia Podcast: My Story

On this inaugural episode of the Fitlandia Podcast, Christa King shares her personal fitness journey, tells you what to expect from the show each week, and how you can put an end to dieting. Christa’s story serves as a prime example of how our environment, negative emotions, and life stressors can create a self-reinforcing process of unhealthy patterns. Her story is also an example of how making a healthy lifestyle change and the power of positivity can end the cycle of yo-yo dieting and result in permanent weight loss.

After years of climbing the corporate ladder, stressors and chaos overwhelmed Christa’s life. This imbalance of time and energy led her back into old patterns and she began to rely on food and alcohol as a release. In an attempt to regain control she tried everything from dieting programs to synthetic hormones. These resulted in short-term weight fluctuations, but nothing ever stuck because she was hopping from one short-term solution...
