Episode 110 - The Autoimmune Breakthrough with Dr. Kirstin Lauritzen

This is Fitlandia's 110th episode. We are talking with Dr. Kirstin Lauritzen about Autoimmune breakthroughs. Dr. Kirstin is here putting a spin on how to make break throughs living with autoimmunity while engaging in your day to day  lifestyle.

How do you know if you have autoimmune, what do you do
about it?  What is it even, I have a soft place in my heart for this because I have Hashimoto and you know, I didn't know what that was.  I didn't know what was wrong with me. And I struggled with, you know, weird illnesses for so many years.

Okay. So I am classically trained as a chiropractor, but that wasn't quite
enough for me. So I went and I got my masters in human nutrition and
functional medicine because I love nutrition and healing the body with food.

I'm all about a balance between Western medicine and traditional medicine, but also working with natural paths and really creating a team. I think they all have a...

Episode 20 - Stories of Transformation: Queing Jones

Positive thinking and affirmations led Queing Jones down the path to a full body and mind transformation. After a pivotal moment by the lake, she made a promise to herself to be better – to change from the inside out. Fitlandia and Mind Zoning® helped her realize that lasting change starts with the mind.

A Walk by the Lake

Growing up, Queing was uncomfortable with her size. She would cringe at the not-so-cute clothes in the plus size section as a little girl. In college, she compared herself to the other girls in her dorm. The more she focused on the number on the scale, the higher it seemed to go.

During the summer of 2014, Queing was experiencing several unfortunate life situations at once – she lost her job, was moving, going through a breakup and living off her savings to get by. One day she went for a walk by the lake next to her new place; the water made her feel calmer. She thought about how her conversations with herself were always so...

Sleep Deprivation: The Silent Killer

Sleep Deprivation: The Silent Killer

~Stacey Chillemi

Most individuals do not realize that getting enough quality sleep at the right times can help protect your mental health, physical health, quality of life, and safety. Sleep deprivation not only affects your overall daily performance, in a short period of time it can also cause chronic illness.

Most individuals require at least eight hours of sleep a night. According to Harvard Medical School, studies show that sleeping less than five hours a night increases the risk of death from all causes by about 15 percent.

Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington provides brilliant insight in The Sleep Revolution.  The studies concluded that even though we may not know how we develop the common cold we do know how to increase the likelihood of getting one. Huffington continues to discuss how we open the door to other illnesses like cancer when we deprive ourselves of sleep.

Packed with magnificent advice,...

Crossfit - What's All the Buzz?

I’ve been leading a running group for the past several months, heading out about 3 times per week. I knew I needed more strength training so I began adding in a HIIT (high intensity interval training) workout for 7-minutes at the end of each run. It felt great and we all loved doing it.

With the days getting shorter (aka darkness, cold, and PacNW rain) and attendance dropping off for the runs, I decided to seek out some new options for my hubby and me to try out. Enter Crossfit!

We went to VC Crossfit here in Portland, OR. I can’t say enough about these folks, the gym, and our experience through their On-Ramp Program! Renn, Tom, and Tyler in particular worked with us very closely, but the entire staff is really amazing - ensuring a safe, enjoyable, and HARD workout.

The community aspect of Crossfit is a rare gem of a find. As many of you Fitlandians know, I’m all about community and VC Crossfit delivers.

So How Was My Workout?

Although I’m a regular...
